It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Willow Ridge Elementary School teacher Chong Bedard. Chong’s death on Wednesday evening was a tremendous loss to our school community and all who knew her. Superintendent Bill Barnes expressed his heartfelt condolences in a letter to families on Thursday, emphasizing the positive impact Chong had on countless students, colleagues, and families throughout her years of service.

“Mrs.. Bedard worked tirelessly in Grand Ledge Public Schools for many years, dedicating herself to nurturing young minds and fostering a love of learning,” Barnes wrote. “Her warmth, compassion, and unwavering commitment left a lasting impression on everyone she touched. She was not only an outstanding educator but also a caring friend and confidant to many in our district.”

In his message, Superintendent Barnes extended his deepest sympathies to Chong Bedard’s family, friends, and the entire school community. “On behalf of Grand Ledge Public Schools, I extend our deepest condolences during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with her loved ones as we remember her life and legacy.”

In response to this tragic loss, several schools within the district made the decision to close on Thursday as a mark of respect and to allow staff, students, and families time to grieve. Delta Center Elementary, Holbrook Elementary, Wacousta Elementary, and Willow Elementary were all closed. Additionally, programs such as Little Comets, the Great Start Readiness Program, Head Start, and Early Childhood Special Education were canceled for the day. Adventure Club, the before- and after-school childcare program, was also not in operation.

Meanwhile, Grand Ledge High School, Beagle Middle School, and Hayes Intermediate School remained open, providing stability for students and families during this difficult time.

Superintendent Barnes acknowledged that the school closures may have posed challenges for families but explained that the decision was made to give elementary teachers and staff, who worked closely with Mrs. Bedard, the opportunity to hear the news personally and process their grief before resuming their responsibilities. “Out of respect for Mrs. Bedard’s family and our staff, we were unable to share more details last evening. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility as we navigate this very sad situation,” he stated.

The district assured families that staff shared a supportive message with students who had school on Thursday, and counselors are available to provide support. A crisis response team will be present when students return to school to assist with any emotional needs.

Most schools are expected to operate on their usual schedule Friday. The district will communicate plans regarding Willow Ridge Elementary School by 5 p.m. Thursday, ensuring that families are kept informed.
